1. "Its a great advantage not to drink among hard-drinking people." -Jordan Baker
It
is saying that in this time it is better to not drink around the
outrageous people that do drink and so stupid things. Like in the
present the people who drink and drive. They cause accidents and it is
better not to drink. It represents the roaring twenties by showing about
all the people that did drink back then and did un-logical things.
2. "There was music from my neighbor's house through the summer nights."
Showing
the roaring twenties adventurous period and full of parties. With all
the people that go through it. Today we still have those parties like
sweet 16.
3. "I hope she'll be a fool - that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."
That
girls didn't have the full respect of men yet and all they could be is
fools to get money or somewhere. As of today though everything has
changed. Women don't have to be fools but whatever they want to be.
4. "There are only the pursed, the pursuing, the busy and the tired."
Meaning
that there are only people who have or still are following their
dreams. People that are doing there jobs or tired from doing things for
so long. It is still like that today also.
5. "It
occurred to me that there was no difference between men, in intelligence
or race, so profound as the difference between the sick and the well."
That in this time period race or intelligence does not matter. It is only the sick and well is how you were defined.
